The Baseball Boys Are Back

I'm Not Actually Talking About The Team

If there is any team on campus I have an absolute sweet spot for, it’s the baseball team.

That’s not news to any of you all who watch the show, but it might explain some of Team Squarin’s actions recently.

Since earning ranked wins over Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, the baseball team has done a lot more losing than winning. Right now, the Bobcats sit one game below .500 at 11-12 overall.

Not exactly ideal. But far from #over.

Last week also brought the news of a coaching change for the Bobcats. David Pierce left to be Rice’s head coach after serving in a mostly advisory role at Texas State under Coach Steven Trout.

But bad records create bad headline,s which create bad rumors or speculation online.

I saw a report from a young University Star reporter claiming that “more changes were rumored to be coming for the baseball team.”

All that took to fact-check was a text to the Sports Information Director, Philip.

The cherry on top was that baseball actually ended their previous six-game losing skid this past weekend while me and Andrew paid a visit to sunny San Marcos.

Andrew keeps saying I did way too much for this story and maybe I shouldn’t have done anything at all. But again, I have a sweet spot for baseball.

The reason I am up late writing this newsletter is that the Bobcats will spend part of their week playing UTSA (19-7 overall) on Tuesday and UIW (12-14 overall) on Wednesday before heading off to trade places with the softball team and play Coastal Carolina this weekend.

The Roadrunners also have logged wins against Texas A&M, Texas and Dallas Baptist this season.

The Cardinals actually beat the Roadrunners head-to-head at UTSA and beat TXST earlier in March in a Ryder Hernandez revenge game.

I still think the Bobcats are a top-half Sun Belt team. Picking up that sweep over Arkansas State really helped that argument. The team currently sits 8th in the conference standings. The ceiling for this team has really yet to be determined, but getting back into the conference tourney should be priority number one for this squad.

On the other side of the ball and stick sport complex, our beloved softball team got a first-hand look at how good the Chanticleer (26-7) squad is.

The softball team (20-8 overall) was able to escape the sweep in Conway. But this was also the first significant road work the team had done to this point in the season. The team has hosted more tournaments and more road team at the softball complex than I’m sure is fair.

Softball will host UTSA (14-16 overall) on Wednesday before heading out to Huntington, West Virginia to take on the Thundering Herd (19-13), the current number-one team in the Sun Belt Conference standings.

For my own mental health, I really need the wins over UTSA.

It just means more!

This week, I’m going to be joined by a few baseball alum to talk about the current season since Zimmel decided to be a good citizen and go to jury duty.

Thanks for Squarin’
