PAC Watch: Much Ado About Nothing

We Back!

Greetings Cuatro Corners Cartel Familia!

It’s been a minute since our last newsletter drop. For any new subscribers, this newsletter was started, like most things, to cover football. I usually drop some insight following the Monday morning Sun Belt Conference Coaches’ media availability call in the off-season, I’ll do the same for the other sports.

Andrew and I are embarking on our third year of coverage of everything in the Athletics world back in the 78666 and we are right in the heat of crossover season with men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball. You can even throw in soccer in there, who is playing exhibition games for their spring slate.

But all anyone wants to talk about is a conference move. If you go online, any Harry, Dick or Don will tell you something new almost every day about the subject.

This is what we can confirm: Texas State is entertaining any and all offers, provided of course that they make sense, both for all of our teams and especially for the money.

I wish I could say more, but truthfully, I don’t know much more beyond that.

There is a lot of speculation that the Bobcats could be invited by the new PAC 12 conference once the official terms of their very hyped media deal is sorted out. But all of that feels like what everything else online: A rumour.

A few months ago, back in the football season, I filed an open records request looking into what schools or presentations had been given to Texas State. All that returned was a Zoom meeting from the Mountain West Conference.

Those talks started and stopped when money was brought up. Ultimately, Texas State decided to forgo the Mountain West Conference’s invitation to join.

Back here in the Sun Belt, Texas State’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are headed to sunny Pensacola for the SBC Tourney.

On the Men’s side, Terrence Johnson’s squad enters the tournament as the 10th seed. Set to play either Marshall (11) or South Alabama (12) on Weds. March 5.

Coach Zenarae Antoine’s squad enters the tournament as the 7th seed set to play either Old Dominion, Louisiana or ULM on Thurs. March 6.

Not ideal seasons for either team. Johnson’s team enters the tournament with an overall record of 16-15 and Antoine’s team enters the tournament with an overall record of 13-16.

Only the winner of the tournament gets a bid to the big dance. Insane things have happened in the tournament for our beloved #CardiacCats. Could this be #ouryear despite the odds? We’ll know when the whistle goes.

A lot of excitement on at the baseball and softball complex.

Softball continues to prove why they are one of the best teams on campus with a 12-6 record on the season. The team went 2-3 at the Texas A&M invitational tournament in College Station this past weekend.

Ricci Woodard’s squad gives me a reason to get out of bed every day to be honest. They’re tough, they’re good and they’re disciplined. She also routinely will put together a tough non-con schedule and the results show up in the spring.

Speaking of A&M, a lot of Bobcats are still riding high off of the huge win at Blue Bell Park over the once upon a time #1 ranked Aggies.

Zim and I hinted on the show this week, the series between Grand Canyon University and the ‘Cats would be a much better temperature check and I think that checks out.

The boys avoided being swept with a Chase Mora walk off homer on Sunday! How about that #SlamMarcos? Still much to be desired from a hits and runs perspective, but the arms are there. Things are getting fun! Still early, the wins mean more every day.

My biggest gripe is showing up for the big games like we did last year and then falling flat in conference. Right now, I won’t say we’re mirroring that trend, but like I said, the GCU series is my temperature check. What is this team really and where can they go?

Baseball’s got a few tune up games in the works before hosting TCU and then traveling out to Boone, N.C., to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers. That’s going to be Must See Tv.

Good to catch up! Me and Zim will be doing more of the same plus some football headlines for the spring game!

See ya then!

Thanks for Squarin’
