Into Conference Play We Go!
My apologies for the late write-up, I was in Nueva York last week watching Bill Burr on Broadway!
It was all fun and games until I had to spend the night in the DFW airport when my flight home got bumped and then canceled altogether with the weather in the Northeast. More about my travel-related misfortunes on the show this week.
But — fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at this — I can start this off by talking about one of the most newsworthy things in Bobcatland: David Pierce, who was serving as assistant to the head coach is now returning to Rice to be their head baseball coach.
Congrats to @davidpierce_5 for getting the head job at Rice. We are thankful for all of your hard work the last 8 months for @TxStateBaseball! Best of luck and CATS today, CATS for life! #stampede

I won’t waste too much time talking about this, because everyone knows Pierce was left without a dance partner after Texas fired him and then hired Jim Schlossnagle in essentially the middle of last year’s Men’s College World Series.
Pierce returns to pretty familiar territory, both being a native Houstonian and having served as an assistant at Rice for nine seasons.
When we asked Trouty why he looked to hire Pierce in the midst of the Texas shakeup, the answer came in part due to a need and the other due in friendship.
Arkansas State recruited Assistant Coach Jerry Cervantez after last season and Trouty had called Pierce to look into other candidates for the role, but also just called to check in on an old friend.
The two began talking and eventually Trouty pitched him the gig at Texas State, probably fully knowing Pierce would get tons of looks as the season progressed.
Unfortunately for us, Pierce leaves behind a Bobcat team looking for answers and chasing an identity.
This weekend, Texas State Baseball (8-11 overall) was swept by the Appalachian State Mountaineers (11-8 overall), extending our current losing streak to five.
Some positive juju though, the team hosts Baylor (14-5 overall) on Tuesday (today). What’s positive about that? Well, if the team needs a reason to get fired up and steal a midweek game, this is the week to do it.
We have wins over two ranked opponents in Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, technically keeping us perfect in that category though the season has not been perfect by any stretch.
Meantime, Texas State Softball (18-6 overall) is on a heater, thank God.
This past weekend, the team swept App State to extend their current win streak to 6.
Coach Ricci Woodard and her team are doing what they have always done best, kick ass and play to their advertised potential. If you’re not watching this team, I don’t know what you’re doing, this is doing wonders for my mental health.
This week the team hosts Wichita State (13-13 overall) before traveling out to Conway South Carolina to play the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (23-6 overall).
This is softball’s first real road trip outside of playing in the College Station Invitational earlier this season.
That series is going to be must-see TV, don’t fall into the spring football propaganda that will happen this week with the start of practices. Watch softball.
🚨UPDATED SPRING PRACTICE SCHEDULE

As I just said, football will start to post various highlight videos and the sort this week. But I’m not really watching or buying any stock right now. It’s hard to really tell anything from practices and team workouts, I may change my tune on April 12th at the Spring Game. But until then, it’s baseball and softball season!
Why am I not really caring about football?
Well last week, myself and the other Texas State media members were informed that spring practices will be closed to media entirely.
So, all of those dates you see in white on the football calendar pretty much mean nothing to me now.
How can I make up my mind about a team, a recently signed player or anything really unless I see it with my own eyeballs and camera?
The team will have media availability where we can probably talk to coaches and select players, but really, what does that do for me?
Even just the practicality of that would mean me driving down to San Marcos from San Antonio, getting to the media room and staying for maybe 20-30 minutes of questions. Not exactly worth my time to be quite honest.
Now, if I could get some B-roll and talk to coaches and players on the field like we have done in years past, for sure. But, I’m rolling with the punches.
Hard for me to make up my mind about teams that either tell me pretty much not to show up or refuse to talk.
I’ll tell you what though, good to be back in Texas and yes, despite it all, I am excited about the upcoming football season.
